The Importance of Microchipping Pets

A recent news story captured our community's hearts: a dog from Houston, lost and separated from its owner, was found in the Rio Grande Valley and was able to reunite with its family, all thanks to his microchip.

This story shows that while microchipping your pet is simple, the results are profound. Even if your pet ends up 500 miles away, they can still find their way back to you. Unlike collars and tags, which can easily be removed or lost, a microchip is a permanent form of ID. Implanted just under the skin, each microchip carries a unique ID number that, when scanned, reveals the owner's contact information stored in a secure database.

The Benefits of Microchipping

  1. Permanent Identification: Microchips provide lifelong identification for pets.

  2. Increased Chances of Reunion: Pets with microchips are significantly more likely to be reunited with their owners.

  3. Peace of Mind: Knowing your pet has a microchip gives you confidence that they have a safety net if they ever get lost.

Palm Valley Animal Society's Affordable Microchipping Service

Getting your pet microchipped at PVAS is straightforward. While we can perform the procedure during all of our open hours, please call our office ahead of time to let staff know you’re coming. During the appointment, one of our trained professionals will insert the microchip, which is about the size of a grain of rice, beneath your pet’s skin. The procedure is quick and no more painful than a routine vaccination. The best part is that it’s just $10.
